Matatabi
Matatabi is a plant that belongs to the same family as the kiwi and grows in Asia, especially in China and Japan. The small dried branches of this plant have a very special effect on cats. They contain a substance that cats love and that helps them to relax. Matatabi contains actinicin and matatabi lactone. These are alkaloids that influence the nervous stimulation of the feline brain. It is often observed that cats that are relaxed are less interested in matatabi sticks than cats that are stressed.
Agitated, frustrated and apathetic cats can benefit from matatabi. It can be used to distract and calm cats in difficult situations, such as during travel, moving, the arrival of a child, a visit to the veterinarian, or during admission to a cat boarding facility. Excessive stimulation can be expressed in different ways in cats:
• Aggression.
• Destructive instinct (scratching furniture).
• Excessive meowing.
• Excessive licking or hair pulling (which increases the risk of hairballs).
Application
A matatabi stick (pet food supplement) can be given as a toy. Cats will play with the stick, chew it or shred it. Many cats will roll around and rub themselves on the places where the stick or the remains of the stick was. After playing, your pet will be calmer, his pupils will shrink and he will usually end up grooming and sleeping. If the outer bark of the stick is removed, the effect is even more intense.
Do not give more than two or three doses per week, otherwise addiction may occur and the sticks become less interesting. Remove the stick as soon as the cat has finished playing. If using the stick in combination with other medications, consult your veterinarian first. If problems occur, do not give your cat any more sticks to ingest and consult your veterinarian.
There are no harmful side effects. Some cats may have extreme reactions to this product. In fact, some owners have reported that their cats seem to "beam" with pleasure and some cats even begin to drool (slightly). Please note that these reactions are not abnormal.
